You can include this in your "You Do" of the lesson plan and also articulate it in your language objectives for your lesson/unit. Discussion Look through the lesson attached in the link below. VII Lesson Delivery
Discussion Look through the videos below, which are from Doug Lemov's Teach Like a Champion.
- Get everyone's attention when you are giving directions.
- Redirect attention positively and with the least amount of distraction.
- Provide sufficient wait time for student responses consistently.
Discussion One of the best ways to examine your own lesson delivery methodologies is to record yourself presenting a lesson or giving directions. Consider doing this and watching them privately, looking to recognize ways in which you allow student behavior to change your delivery rather than vice versa.
Discussion Read the portion of the free preview of Doug Lemov's book Teach like a Champion (Chapter 3, Structuring and Delivering Lessons). If you want to read more, contact Ms Eldridge or Mr Ellyson to get a copy of the book for PD.
VIII Review/Assessment
- Allow students to demonstrate their ability, knowledge & understanding in meaningful ways.
- Conduct assessments of student comprehension and learning throughout lesson on all lesson objectives (e.g., spot checking, group response.)
- Allow for retakes for full credit.
Discussion One particular struggle we face in teaching ELLs in content classes is how to approach the concept of failure to achieve at native English speaking level, especially considering that even our Newcomers impact our End of Year testing data. In the video below, Rick Wormeli discusses ways of motivating kids to learn when failure is not only an option, it is realistic. What are some ideas or principles he puts forward that will allow you to NOT let a student's " immaturity or lack of development dictate the level of his/her rise"? What is your personal reaction to his message and attitude?
